from The daily Hayom Yom with Rabbi Yosef Katzman
[The Morning Service on this] fast day includes Selichos and Avinu Malkeinu. In response to a question raised at yechidus, the Tzemach Tzedek once explained: כְּתִיב יַעֲזוֹב רָשָׁע דַּרְכּוֹ וְאִישׁ אָוֶן מַחְשְׁבוֹתָיו גו“It is written, ‘Let the wicked man abandon his path and the man of iniquity [abandon] his thoughts.’אָוֶן הוּא מִלְּשׁוֹן אוֹן בְּחוֹלָם, שֶׁפִּרוּשׁוֹ כֹּחַ וְעוֹז“The word אָוֶן (‘iniquity’) can also be interpreted as hinting at אוֹן (‘strength’). וּכְשֵׁם דְיַעֲזוֹב רָשָׁע דַּרְכּוֹ זֶהוּ דָבָר הַמּוּכְרָחJust as a wicked man must ‘abandon his path,’ אֲשֶׁר בְּלֹא תְּשׁוּבָה אִי אֶפְשָׁר לָגֶשֶׁת אֶל הַקֹּדֶשׁfor without teshuvah he cannot approach holiness, הִנֵּה כְּמוֹ כֵן צָרִיךְ הָאִישׁ אוֹןso too, a man of strength — כְּלוֹמַר אִישׁ הֶחָזָק בְּדַעַת עַצְמוֹthat is, a person who is strong and confident in his own opinions — לַעֲזוֹב מַחְשְׁבוֹתָיוmust ‘abandon his thoughts.’ וְלֹא יֹאמַר אִיך זאָג אַזוֹי, אִיך האַלט אַזוֹיHe should no longer say: ‘This is what I say,’ or ‘This is how I hold.’ כִּי כָל “אִיך" וּמְצִיאוּת הוּא מְקוֹר הָרַע וְגוֹרֵם פֵּרוּד לְבָבוֹתFor any mention of ‘I’ and [any conception of oneself as an] entity [of weighty import] is the source of evil and instills divisiveness between people’s hearts.”Text and Translation courtesy of Sichos in English
