דעֶר בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב פלעֶגט לעֶרנעֶן מִיט זַיינעֶ תַּלְמִידִים אַ שִׁעוּר גְּמָרָאThe Baal Shem Tov conducted a regular study session in Gemara with his disciples, דעֶר אוֹפֶן פוּן דעֶם לעֶרנעֶן אִיז געֶוועֶן מִיט גרוֹיס חֲרִיפוּת אוּן גְּאוֹנוּתcombining acumen and erudition. אוּן מ'האָט געֶלעֶרעֶנט דעֶם רַמְבַּ"ם אַלְפַס רָא"שׁIt embraced the writings of Rambam, R. Yitzchak Alfasi, and Rabbeinu Asher, אוּן אַנדעֶרעֶ מְפָרְשִׁים פוּן דִי רִאשׁוֹנִיםand other commentaries of the Rishonim וועֶלכעֶ זַיינעֶן שַׁיָּךְ געֶוועֶן צוּ דעֶר גְּמָרָא וואָס מ'האָט געֶלעֶרעֶנטthat were relevant to the passage under discussion.דעֶר בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב פלעֶגט אָפטַייטשׁעֶן דִי וועֶרטעֶר אִין אִידִישׁThe Baal Shem Tov, [to introduce his explanation of each passage of the Gemara,] would translate its words into Yiddish. אַז מ'האָט געֶלעֶרעֶנט עֲרָכִיןWhen they were studying Tractate Arachin, אוּן געֶקוּמעֶן צוּם מַאֲמַר רַזַ"ל (טו ב) לָשׁוֹן תְּלִיתָאי קָטִיל תְּלִיתָאיthey reached the statement of the Sages (on p.15b) that “threefold speech kills three people.” האָט דעֶר בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב דאָס אוֹיסגעֶטַייטשׁטThe Baal Shem Tov explained: לָשׁוֹן הָרָע הַרג'ט אַלעֶ דְרַיי“Evil speech kills all three people — דעֶם אוֹיסטראַכטעֶרthe person who first invented the story, דעֶם דעֶרצֵיילעֶרthe [present] speaker, אוּן דעֶם צוּהעֶרעֶרand the listener. נאָר דאָס אִיז אִין לְבוּשִׁים רוּחָנִיםHowever, this happens to their spiritual garments, וואָס דאָס אִיז שׁוועֶרעֶר וִוי רְצִיחָה אִין גַּשְׁמִיּוּתwhich is more severe than killing someone physically.”Text and Translation courtesy of Sichos in EnglishFor questions and follow-up: [email protected]
