Hayom Yom 14 Elul - Shun offensive wars fortify our own structure

מֵהוֹרָאוֹת אַאַמוּ"רA directive of my revered father, [the Rebbe Rashab]: לְהִנָּזֵר מִמִּלְחֶמֶת תְּנוּפָה עַד קְצֵה הָאַחֲרוֹן“To take the offensive in battle should be shunned to the utmost לֹא מִפְּנֵי שֶׁאֵין לָנוּ בַּמֶּה לְנַצֵּחַ אוֹ מִפְּנֵי מוֹרֶךְ לֵבnot because we lack the wherewithal to be victorious, nor because we are faint of heart, אֶלָּא מִפְּנֵי שֶׁאֶת כָּל כּוֹחוֹתֵינוּ עָלֵינוּ לְהַקְדִּישׁ אַךְ וְרַק לְחִזּוּק בִּנְיָנֵינוּbut because all our energy should be dedicated solely to fortifying our edifice, בִּנְיַן הַתּוֹרָה וְהַמִּצְוֹת בִּקְדוּשָּׁה וּבְטָהֳרָהthe edifice of the Torah and its mitzvos, with holiness and purity. וְעַל זֶה עָלֵינוּ לִמְסוֹר אֶת נַפְשׁוֹתֵינוּ בִּמְסִירַת נֶפֶשׁ בְּפוֹעַל וְלֹא רַק בְּכֹחַWe should dedicate our souls to this goal with actual — not merely theoretical — self-sacrifice.”Text and Translation courtesy of Sichos in English
