עוֹמְדִין בְּעֵת קְרִיאַת הַשִּׁירָהIt is customary to stand while the Song of the Sea is read [in the synagogue on Shabbos Parshas Beshalach].הפטורה: וּדְבוֹרָה אִשָּׁה נְבִיאָהThe haftarah [for Parshas Beshalach] begins U’Devorah ishah neviah (Shoftim 4:4-24 and 5:1-31).עֶס אִיז אַ מִנְהָג צוּ עֶסן שׁוואַרצֶע קאַשֶׁעIt is customary to eat buckwheat [on this day].שַׁבָּת בְּשַׁלַּח שְׁנַת תרכ"א אָמַר הַצֶּמַח צֶדֶק הַמַּאֲמָר רְאוּ כִּי ה' הַנִּדְפָּס בִּלְקוּטֵי תּוֹרָהOn Shabbos Parshas Beshalach, 5621 [1861], the Tzemach Tzedek delivered the maamar entitled Re’u Ki Havayah, which appears in Likkutei Torah. וְסִפֵּר אֲחַר כַּךְ לִבְנוֹ אַאַזְמוּ"רHe later told his son, my revered grandfather, the Rebbe [Maharash]:שַׁבָּת בְּשַׁלַּח שְׁנַת תקס"ה אָמַר אַאַזְמוּ"ר זֶה הַמַּאֲמָרOn Shabbos Parshas BeShalach, 5565 [1805], my revered grandfather, the [Alter] Rebbe, delivered this maamar אֲחַר כַּךְ קָרָא אוֹתִי וְסִפֵּר לִיand called me and told meאֲשֶׁר בִּשְׁנַת תקכ"ט בִּהְיוֹתוֹ בְּמֶעזְרִיטשׁ, קָרָא אוֹתוֹ הָרַב הַמַּגִּיד לְחַדְרוֹ וְאָמַר לוֹthat in the year 5529 [1769], while he was [studying] in Mezritch, the Maggid called him to his room and told him:שַׁבָּת בְּשַׁלַּח שְׁנַת תקט"ז אָמַר הַבַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב מַאֲמָר“On Shabbos Parshas BeShalach, 5516 [1756], the Baal Shem Tov delivered a maamar עַל פָּסוּק וַיָּשָׁב הַיָּם לִפְנוֹת בּוֹקֶר לְאֵיתָנוֹ, לִתְנָאוֹ, כְּמַאֲמַר רַבּוֹתֵינוּ ז"לon the verse, ‘And before dawn, the sea returned to its original strength,’ the last phrase of which our Sages interpret as meaning, ‘according to its stipulation.’בִּשְׁנַת תקכ"א (שָׁנָה אַחֲרֵי הִסְתַּלְּקוּת הַבַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב)“In 5521 [1761], (this was a year after the passing of the Baal Shem Tov),” הָיָה אֶצְלִי — הִמְשִׁיךְ דְּבָרָיו הָרַב הַמַּגִּיד — רַבִּי (הַבַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב)the Maggid continued, “my master, (the Baal Shem Tov,) appeared to meוְאָמַר הַמַּאֲמָר וְהוֹסִיף בֵּאוּר בְּעִנְיַן עוֹשִׂין רְצוֹנוֹ — וְלֹא דְבָרוֹ — שֶׁל מָקוֹםand delivered the maamar [again], adding an explanation of the concept of ‘fulfilling the will’ — as distinct from fulfilling the utterance — ‘of the Omnipresent.’וְהַיּוֹם הָיָה אֶצְלִי מוֹרִי לַחֲזוֹר הַמַּאֲמָר“Today,” [concluded the Alter Rebbe,] “my master [the Maggid] appeared to me to review the maamar.”וְאָמַר הָרַב הַמַּגִּיד הַמַּאֲמָר לִפְנֵי אַדְמוּ"ר הַזָּקֵןThe Maggid delivered the maamar before the Alter Rebbe וְהוֹסִיף בֵּאוּר בְּעִנְיַן גִּנַאי נַהֲרָא שֶׁזֶּהוּ כְּעִנְיַן קְרִיעַת יַם סוּףand added an explanation regarding [the splitting of] the Ginai River [for R. Pinchas ben Yair], likening it to the Splitting of the Sea of Reeds.וְסִיֵּים הַצֶּמַח צֶדֶקThe Tzemach Tzedek concluded:הַיּוֹם הָיוּ אֶצְלִי הַבַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב, הָרַב הַמַּגִּיד, ואַאַזְמוּ"ר, וְכָל אֶחָד אָמַר לִי הַמַּאֲמָר בְּסִגְנוֹנוֹ“Today, the Baal Shem Tov, the Maggid, and my revered grandfather, the [Alter] Rebbe, appeared to me. Each of them delivered the maamar to me according to his own style.” — כַּעֲבוֹר אֵיזֶה שָׁעוֹת קָרָא הַצֶּמַח צֶדֶק אֶת אַאַזְמוּ"ר עוֹד הַפַּעַםA few hours later the Tzemach Tzedek again summoned my revered grandfather, the Rebbe [Maharash],וְאָמַר לְפָנָיו בֵּאוּר עַל הַמַּאֲמָרand gave him an explanation of that maamar.Text and Translation courtesy of Sichos in English
