Day 17 of the Omerיוֹם הוּלֶּדֶת אֶת אַאַזְמוּ"ר — בִּשְׁנַת תּקצ"גThe birthday of my revered grandfather, the Rebbe [Maharash], in the year 5593 (1833).צוּ זִיבּעֶן יאָהר האָט עֶם אַמאָל דעֶר צֶמַח צֶדֶק פאַרהעֶרטOnce, when he was seven years old, [his father] the Tzemach Tzedek tested him in his studies.דֶער זֵיידעֶ האָט געֶמאַכט אַזוֹי גוּטMy grandfather answered so wellאַז זַיין מְלַמֵּד אִיז זֵייעֶר נִתְפָּעֵל געֶוואָרעֶןthat his teacher became exuberant.האָט זִיך נִיט געֶקעֶנט אַיינהאַלטעֶןUnable to contain himself,אוּן געֶזאָגט דעֶם צֶמַח צֶדֶקhe turned to the Tzemach Tzedek: הַא, וואָס זאָגט אִיהר, עֶר מאַכט גוּט“Ah!
