Hayom Yom 8 Adar 1 - A Yud above, a Yud below, a line in between.דעֶר אַלטעֶר רֶבִּי האָט אַמאָל אַרַיינְגעֶרוּפעֶן אַ יוּנְגעֶרמאַן פוּן דעֶם מַגִּיד'ס תַּלְמִידִיםThe Alter Rebbe once summoned a young disciple of the Maggid [of Mezritch].אוּן האָט אִיהם געֶזאָגט — מִיט אַ נִגּוּן, כְּדַרְכּוֹSpeaking in his customary singsong, he said:“אִיך האָבּ אַ מִצְוָה פוּן וְלִּמַדְתֶּם אוֹתָם אֶת בְּנֵיכֶם“I am charged with the commandment, ‘And you shall teach them to your children,’דוּ האָסט אַ מִצְוָה פוּן זָן וּמְפַרְנֵס בְּנֵי בֵיתוֹand you are charged with the mitzvah of providing for your family.לאָמִיר זִיך בַּייטעֶןLet us exchange tasks.אִיך וועֶל דִיר געֶבּעֶן דוּ זאָלְסט קעֶנעֶן מְקַיֵּים זַיין דַיין מִצְוָהI will provide you with what you need to fulfill your mitzvah, אוּן דוּ לעֶרעֶן מִיט מַיין זוּןand you will teach my son” —דאָס אִיז געֶוועֶן דעֶר מִיטעֶלעֶר רֶבִּיwho was the Mitteler Rebbe.אוּן האָט אִיהם מְבַאֵר געֶוועֶן סֵדֶר הַלִּמוּדThe Alter Rebbe then gave him a study plan:דאָס עֶרשְׁטעֶ לעֶרעֶנְט מעֶן אוֹתִיוֹת א. בּ“First, you should teach him the letters of the alef-beis. וואָס אִיז אַן אַלֶףWhat is an alef? אַ פִּינְטעֶלעֶ פוּן אוֹיבּעֶן, אַ פִּינְטעֶלעֶ פוּן אוּנְטעֶן, אַ קַו בְּאֶמְצַעA point above, a point below, and a line in between.דאָס אִיז אַן אַלֶףThat makes an alef.אַ קִינְד מוּז ווִיסעֶן“A child must knowאַז דעֶר אַלֶף פוּן תּוֹרָהthat the first principle of the Torahאִיז דעֶר יוּד פוּן אוֹיבּעֶןis a yud Above,דעֶר יוּד פוּן אוּנְטעֶןa yid below, מִיט דעֶם קַו פוּן אֱמוּנָה וואָס בּאַהעֶפְט זֵייand a line of faith that connects them.”נאָך אַ נוּסְחָא אִיז דאָOr, according to another version:אַ יוּד לְמַעְלָה דאָס אִיז דִי נְשָׁמָה“The yud above is the soul,אַ אִיד לְמַטָּה דאָס אִיז דעֶר גּוּףthe yud below is the body,אוּן אַ קַו שֶׁל יִרְאַת שָׁמַיִם בְּאֶמְצַעand the line in the middle is the fear of Heaven.”Hayom Yom 8 Adar 2 - One action is better than a thousand sighsאַאַמוּ"ר כּוֹתֵב בְּאֶחָד מִמִּכְתָּבָיוMy revered father, the Rebbe [Rashab], writes in one of his letters:טוֹבָה פְּעוּלָּה אַחַת מֵאֶלֶף אֲנָחוֹת“One action is better than a thousand sighs.אֱלֹקֵינוּ חַי וְתוֹרָה וּמִצְוֹת נִצְחִיִּים הֵמָּהOur G‑d is alive and the Torah and its mitzvos are eternal.עֲזוֹב אֶת הָאֲנָחָהAbandon sighing,וּשְׁקוֹד בַּעֲבוֹדָה בְּפוֹעַל וִיחָנְךָ הָאֱלֹקִיםapply yourself diligently to actual avodah, and G‑d will be gracious to you.”Text and Translation courtesy of Sichos in EnglishFor information and support write [email protected]
