Health Ministry Strengthens Response to Rising Respiratory Illnesses with New Guidelines & Free Facemask Distribution
from Government of Saint Lucia
The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs has observed a notable increase in respiratory illnesses in early 2025, mirroring global trends. Routine in-country surveillance has confirmed that 85% of cases are attributed to Influenza A, with additional detections of Influenza B and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). In response to the surge, the Ministry has implemented two key measures to mitigate the spread of respiratory illnesses. These include the development of updated protocols for the prevention and management of respiratory infections and the procurement of face masks for distribution across various sectors. Medical Surveillance Officer in the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs, Dr. Dana DaCosta Gomez, presents this Health Statement outlining the proactive steps being taken to safeguard public health. The Ministry remains committed to protecting the health and well-being of all citizens and will provide ongoing updates as necessary.
