Un 13 de julio de 1968 sale a la luz Born to be wild, tercer single del primer disco de Steppenwolf. Esta banda, formada en ese momento por John Kay, Larry Byrom, Goldy McJohn, Jerry Edmonton y Nick St. Nicholas, había grabado este álbum durante octubre de 1967. Este single encontró su propio camino y, ha sido considerada como la canción con la que germinó el heavy metal, pues en el segundo verso de la canción, John Kay canta "Heavy Metal Thunder", término que más tarde se usará para denominar ese estilo dentro del rock. Born to be wild es una mezcla perfecta de blues y rock, un riff de guitarra inconfundible y una letra que resume libertad, ansia por tomar las riendas, por ser dueños de nuestro propio destino, de buscar nuevas aventuras y de no conformarse. Fue escrita por Mars Bonfire (antes Dennis Edmonton), antiguo miembro de Sparrow y hermano de Jerry. Hoy escucharemos de la banda canadiense Steppenwolf, Born to be wild.
