En 2002 se publicaba el primer borrador del genoma del ratón. Era un nuevo hito de la ciencia, que abría muchas esperanzadoras puertas a la biomedicina ¿Qué ha sucedido desde entonces? Un montón de cosas. Al poco de la publicación del borrador del genoma del ratón, se estableció un consorcio de centros de investigación y laboratorios, llamado Consorcio Internacional de Fenotipado del Ratón, IMPC, por sus siglas en inglés. Este consorcio internacional se propuso el ambicioso objetivo de generar ratones knockout para todos los genes de este animal, al menos para los genes que generan proteínas. En el último informe de este consorcio, que data de agosto de 2021, los científicos comunicaban que, de los estimados 25.000 genes del ratón, solo quedaban por eliminar algo menos de 3.400.
