Andrea Pol praat met schrijfster Alejandra Ortiz over De waarheid zal me bevrijden. En met Simone Peek, zij is de vertaalster van dit boek. In een klein dorp in Mexico leeft de jonge Alejandra een uitzichtloos bestaan. Door armoede gedreven en op zoek naar genegenheid, verkoopt ze al op haar dertiende haar lichaam. Ondertussen leert ze dat ze anders is, dat het hier voor haar niet veilig is. Ze gaat naar de VS, maar zonder papieren is het leven ook daar niet gemakkelijk. In 2015 komt Alejandra aan op Schiphol en krijgt ze een enkeltje Ter Apel. Ondanks grote tegenspoed - de stroperige procedures, afwijzingen en depressie - houdt ze haar ultieme zoektocht naar vrijheid vol. Ze verlangt te leven, lief te hebben en te zijn wie ze werkelijk is. De waarheid zal me bevrijden is het aangrijpende verhaal van Alejandra, een trans vrouw op zoek naar een veilig thuis. Bij vlagen een verdrietig verhaal, maar levenslust en doorzettingskracht overheersen van begin tot eind.
