Annemieke Bosman in gesprek met Eric de Vroedt. Regisseur, schrijver en artistiek leider van Het Nationale Theater Eric de Vroedt draagt dit jaar de Staat van het Theater voor. Hij opent hiermee officieel het Nederlands Theater Festival in het teken van “prachtig, urgent, meeslepend en onontkoombaar theater” op donderdagmiddag 7 september. "Terwijl de wereld wordt geteisterd door hittegolven, monsterstormen, militaire coups en politieke aardverschuivingen, terwijl diverse groepen in de samenleving steeds radicaler tegenover elkaar staan, terwijl burgers, overheid, instituten en bedrijven worstelen met de hoognodige transitie en vernieuwing die vaak op zich laat wachten, wordt er ondertussen in dit land prachtig, urgent, meeslepend en onontkoombaar theater gemaakt. Vol trots op mijn collega's en hun werk spreek ik dit jaar de Staat van het Theater uit. Niet om te benoemen wat er allemaal verkeerd gaat of wat zou moeten zijn. Laat ik eens proberen te benoemen wat er is, wie wij zijn, wat ik ben en waarom nu al meer dan dertig jaar doe wat ik doe", aldus De Vroedt. Het Nederlands Theater Festival opent jaarlijks het nieuwe theaterseizoen met De Staat van het Theater. Daarin geven prominenten uit het culturele veld traditiegetrouw hun kijk op het Nederlandse theaterklimaat. Het festival toont van 7 t/m 17 september 2023 het meest indrukwekkende wat er in het afgelopen seizoen op theatergebied te zien is en wordt afgesloten met de uitreiking van de belangrijkste Nederlandse toneelprijzen op zondag 17 september 2023.
