Annemieke Bosman in gesprek met schrijver Erik Brouwer. Brouwer's nieuwste boek 'Leen Sanders' gaat over een bokser die levens redde in Auschwitz. De Joodse Leen Sanders (Rotterdam, 1908) had als bokser al internationaal faam gemaakt toen hij op 11 januari 1943 met zijn gezin via Westerbork naar Auschwitz werd gedeporteerd. Zijn vrouw en twee zoons, acht en tien jaar oud, werden meteen na aankomst vermoord. Leen ontsnapte aan de gaskamer, omdat een ss’er de bokser herkende. Op voorwaarde dat hij wedstrijden zou boksen in het kamp, ter vermaak van nazi-kopstukken, werd hij tewerkgesteld in de keukens. Twee jaar lang wist Leen zo niet alleen zichzelf in leven te houden, maar ook veel van zijn medegevangenen, door voedsel en kleding te stelen en die te verdelen onder de allerzwaksten. Erik Brouwer (1972) is schrijver en freelancejournalist. Eerder verschenen van hem onder meer 'Voetbal in Europa', 'Diva' en 'Spartacus', dat bekroond werd met de Nico Scheepmaker Beker voor beste sportboek.
