Hij schreef eerder Het digitale proletariaat, Digitale detox en Wij nihilisten.Schnitzler heeft zich nu gestort op het caféleven. Het traditionele café lijkt op sterven na dood te zijn. Toch weten deze sociale pleisterplaatsen de gemoederen flink te beroeren. Dat de wereld van toog en tapkast onverminderd tot de verbeelding spreekt, komt omdat ze een menselijke maat vertegenwoordigt die in het leven daarbuiten vaak afwezig is. In zijn nieuwe boek Filosofie van de kroeg gaat Hans Schnitzler, die graag en regelmatig in het café te vinden is, op zoek naar wat die maat behelst. De veelal onbekommerde cafésfeer staat namelijk in schril contrast met een samenlevingsklimaat dat steeds guurder en onleefbaarder lijkt te worden. De politieke polarisatie neemt toe, het vijanddenken heerst alom en overal klinkt de roep om meer ‘gemeenschapszin’.Zou het kunnen dat in de microkosmos van het kleinschalige café aanwijzingen te vinden zijn voor een milder en prettiger samenlevingsklimaat?
