Annemieke Bosman in gesprek met Herien Wensink, schrijver en chef kunst bij de Volkskrant. Wensink's nieuwste roman 'Soldaat op zolder' gaat over een gedoemde liefde ten tijde van de de Vietnamoorlog. Als klein meisje was Herien Wensink verliefd op een foto. Een foto van een knappe Amerikaanse soldaat, die in haar ouderlijk huis op zolder stond. De jongeman bleek ene Stephen Ralph Mullins, die op jonge leeftijd sneuvelde in Vietnam. Het portret was een cadeau voor haar moeder, zijn grote liefde. In Soldaat op zolder gaat Wensink op zoek naar deze Steve: in brieven, in archieven en in de bergen van West Virginia. Een verkenning die voert van Hilversum, eind jaren tachtig, via Shady Spring in de sixties naar Vietnam, om uiteindelijk aan te komen in het Amerika van nu. Wensink is chef kunst bij de Volkskrant, hiervoor was zij tien jaar cultuurredacteur bij NRC Handelsblad. Haar debuutroman 'Kleihuid' werd genomineerd voor diverse prijzen waaronder de De Bronzen Uil en de Anton Wachterprijs.
