Vierhonderd jaar geleden arriveerden de eerste Nederlandse kolonisten in het gebied dat nu New York is. Hun opdracht vanuit de Nederlandse West-Indische Compagnie (WIC) was om de kolonie Nieuw Nederland te stichten, met de hoofdstad Nieuw Amsterdam, op de zuidpunt van het huidige Manhattan. Het Amsterdam Museum maakt samen met het Museum of the City of New York en vertegenwoordigers van de Lenape – oorspronkelijke bewoners van dit gebied in de Verenigde Staten – een tentoonstelling over deze gedeelde geschiedenis. De tentoonstelling Manahahtáanung of Nieuw Amsterdam? Het Inheemse verhaal achter New York is van 16 mei tot en met 10 november 2024 te zien in het Amsterdam Museum aan de Amstel. In deze tentoonstelling wordt vanuit Inheems perspectief gekeken naar de decennialange periode van Nederlandse kolonisatie van het gebied, de gevolgen hiervan voor de Inheemse bewoners en hun strijd
