Brecht van Hulten in gesprek met schrijver Irwan Droog. Irwan Droog debuteerde in 2022 met de bestseller Het huis aan het einde, over zijn verblijf op een klein eiland in Noorwegen. Nu komt Droog met een nieuw boek Wally en wij, een reis in het kielzog van een wereldberoemde walrus. In maart 2021 werd de bevolking van het Ierse Valentia Island verrast door een unieke bezoeker: een jonge, vermoeide walrus, die in de maanden daarna langs de kust van West-Europa zou reizen en zich onderweg regelmatig aan boord van kleine bootjes hees. Waarom was deze walrus zo ver van huis? Was hij in slaap gevallen op een ijsschots en afgedreven, of dwong het smeltende zee-ijs in het poolgebied hem naar het zuiden? Het lijkt erop dat we ons leefgebied meer en meer zullen gaan delen met diersoorten die we vroeger alleen konden bewonderen in dierentuinen. Hoe gaan we daarmee om? Irwan Droog trad in de voetsporen van Wally, en ging op zoek naar antwoorden. Wally en wij vertelt het verhaal van een walrus die een onuitwisbare indruk achterliet, tegen de achtergrond van mens-dierrelaties in een snel veranderende wereld.
