Annemieke Bosman in gesprek met filmmaker Jaap van Heusden. Het fascinerende Engels-Nederlands-Italiaans gesproken drama De Man uit Rome van filmmaker Jaap van Heusden speelt zich af in een Limburgse dorpsgemeenschap, dat vanuit het Vaticaan bezoek krijgt van een sceptische onderzoekspriester om een huilend Mariabeeld te onderzoeken. In een tijd waarin nepnieuws en leugens het weefsel van onze samenleving ondermijnen, wordt de sceptische priester Filippo (37) door het Vaticaan naar een Limburgs grensdorpje gestuurd om een vermeend wonder te onderzoeken. Een video van een huilend Mariabeeld ging viral en Filippo, wereldwijd berucht om het ontkrachten van vermeende wonderen, is vastbesloten om het beeld te ontmaskeren. Hij stuit op de grimmige dorpsgemeenschap, die diep getraumatiseerd blijkt en zich vastklampt aan hun wonder. Aangetrokken en ontregeld door de zwijgende Térèse (19) die de tranen ontdekte, raakt Filippo verwikkeld in het verdriet van het dorp en in een serie schijnbaar wonderlijke gebeurtenissen die zijn zekerheden over zijn roeping als priester én als mens onderuithalen… Jaap van Heusdenstudeerde af in 2005 met 'Een Ingewikkeld Verhaal, Eenvoudig Verteld ' die geselecteerd werd voor het Cannes Filmfestival. Sindsdien schrijft en regisseert hij korte, middellange- en speelfilms die op veel internationale filmfestivals geprezen werden. 'De Man uit Rome' is zijn vierde speelfilm, na 'Win/Win', 'De Nieuwe Wereld' en 'In Blue' . De film uit(2018 die Gouden Kalveren won voor Beste Regie, Scenario en Actrice op het Nederlands Film Festival.
