Annemieke Bosman in gesprek met theatermaker Jip Smit. Jip Smit's voorstelling 'Motherland is geselecteerd voor het Nederlands Theaterfestival, dat donderdag van start gaat in Amsterdam. De beste voorstellingen van het afgelopen seizoen zijn daar te zien. In 'Motherland; neemt Jip Smit de toeschouwer mee naar een duistere en magische wereld. Een plek waar alles draait om eeuwenoude tradities en rituelen. Hier, op ‘De Eilanden’, worden mannen 80 jaar oud en leven vrouwen maar drie dagen. Maar dan, dan wordt Katinka geboren… 'Motherland' vertelt het verhaal van een strijdlustige vrouw die anders is en zich zal verzetten tegen de gevestigde orde. In deze solovoorstelling brengt Jip Smit een ode aan het fantasy–genre en daagt u uit de grenzen van uw verbeeldingskracht te verleggen. Door afstand te nemen van de realiteit kunnen we deze juist beter bekijken en bevragen. Zo komen we er wellicht achter dat ze op ‘De Eilanden’ minder verschillen van ons dan we denken. In een verhaal vol zwarte humor, waar Game of Thrones en The Office elkaar ontmoeten, worden actuele thema’s als norm-denken en man/vrouw verhoudingen aan de kaak gesteld. Hierin begeeft ons hoofdpersonage Katinka zich op een gevaarlijke zoektocht naar haar identiteit. Ze zal het kwaad van haar verleden in de ogen moeten kijken, en zich bevrijden van de heersende norm. Jip Smit is ook nog eens genomineerd voor een Theo d'Or, de prijs voor meest indrukwekkende vrouwelijke dragende rol!
