Bonen hebben de mens vanaf diens vroegste bestaan gevoed, bonen waren de motor achter de vroegste landbouwrevolutie, de tuinboon hielp Europa door de donkerste dagen van de Middeleeuwen en de zwarte-ogenboon werd meegenomen door tot slaaf gemaakte Afrikanen, en groeide daardoor uit tot het symbool van de Zwarte Amerikaanse emancipatie.
