Brecht van Hulten praat met Jorn Konijn, directeur van het Van Eesterenmuseum in Amsterdam over de expositie Skateboard City, die daar te zien is. Skateboard City is een grootschalige tentoonstelling over skateboardcultuur in relatie tot de stad: origineel, creatief en do-it-yourself. Skateboarders hebben een unieke blik op de stad. Waar sommige stadsbewoners muren en hekken zien als obstakels, beschouwen skateboarders ze als uitdaging. De stad is voor een skateboarder één grote speeltuin. Dit idee staat centraal in de tentoonstelling Skateboard City. Het skateboarden vindt haar oorsprong in de jaren 60 in Santa Monica in Californië (Verenigde Staten van Amerika). Waar surfers bij slecht weer, zoals kleine golven of (te) veel wind, op zoek gingen naar een manier om de tijd te doden, het sidewalk surfen, ook wel skateboarden, werd geboren. De tentoonstelling Skateboard City toont origineel archiefmateriaal van skateboarders uit Amsterdam, films, foto’s, muziek, maquettes, plattegronden én een skateboard ramp. De relatie tussen skateboarding en architectuur wordt in diverse ontwerpprojecten uitgelicht met werk van onder andere Maurer United, SCALA+MANA en Bureau B+B wordt tentoongesteld.
