Op een koude winteravond belandt de zeventigjarige Leah met haar auto in de Haarlemse Leidsevaart. Hoewel de kade al snel vol mensen staat, doet niemand iets. Tot grote frustratie van de jonge studente Mirjam, die wanhopig zoekt naar een manier om redding te bieden. Ze kan toch niet voor haar ogen iemand laten verdrinken? Jaren later kijken de twee vrouwen terug op Leahs 'tewaterlating' - een gebeurtenis die hun beider levens voorgoed veranderde.
