Annemieke Bosman in gesprek met Karin Junger, filmmaker. Junger maakt voor de NTR de documentaire Free Space. Onder druk van activistische groepen wordt kunst steeds vaker gecanceld om ideologische redenen, vanwege ‘culturele toe-eigening’ of vanwege het verlangen naar een safe space. De kleur en gender van de kunstenaar lijken daarbij allesbepalend te zijn. Hoe verhoud je je hiertoe als kunstenaar? Is dit een verontrustende ontwikkeling of juist een teken van emancipatie? En wat betekent het voor de vrijheid van expressie? Filmmaakster Karin Junger ondervond de gevolgen van deze ontwikkeling al in 2017: ‘antiracistische activisten’ meenden dat ze niet het recht had om een documentaire te maken over haar donkere kinderen en hun vrienden. Ze deed dit toch (Ik alleen in de klas) maar bleef zich wel de vraag stellen: wie mag wat maken, wie bepaalt dat en op grond waarvan? Samen met een aantal kunstenaars onderzoekt Junger deze vragen in haar nieuwe documentaire Free Space.
