Shula Tas praat met schrijver Lieke Kézér over haar nieuwe roman Karel Károly. Boedapest, 1920. De elfjarige Károly wordt na de oorlog door zijn ouders op de trein gezet voor een kindertransport naar Nederland, om tijdelijk in een pleeggezin aan te sterken. Maar het loopt anders dan hij verwacht: zijn familie ziet hij pas na twintig jaar terug. Karel bouwt een leven op in Nederland: hij trouwt, wordt boer en sticht een groot gezin. Als hij tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog Joodse onderduikers een plek biedt in zijn boerderij, komt zijn bestaan onder druk te staan. Waarom weigert hij te praten over zijn verleden? Wat maakt dat Karel nooit naar Hongarije terugkeerde? Lieke Kézér (1976) studeerde filmen televisiewetenschappen. Tijdens haar werk als journalist bouwde ze in haar hoofd en op papier jarenlang aan De afwezigen, waar ze de ANV Debutantenprijs en de Bronzen Uil 2017 mee won. In 2019 verschijnt haar tweede roman, De verloren berg.
