Andrea van Pol praat met Lucia Nankoe, curator van de tentoonstelling Surinaamse Trouwportretten in het Amsterdamse Fotografiemuseum FOAM. Vanaf 24 juni 2022 presenteert Foam de tentoonstelling Surinaamse Trouwportretten, een verzameling van bijzondere portretten die samen bijna een eeuw Surinaamse geschiedenis beslaan. De foto’s bestrijken de periode van 1846 tot 1954, toen Suriname nog een Nederlandse kolonie was. De familiefoto’s en -verhalen maken inzichtelijk hoezeer Surinamers onder Nederlands bestuur naar alle windstreken zijn afgereisd. Surinamers waaierden namelijk al vroeg uit over de wereld en vonden hun partner soms elders, op Aruba, Curaçao of Bonaire, in voormalig Nederlands Oost-Indië, Nederland of Noord-Amerika. De kracht van deze verzameling persoonlijke foto’s zit hem dan ook in de veelheid aan verschillende verbintenissen die zich over de hele wereld uitstrekken. Het idee om deze bijzondere portretten bijeen te brengen ontstond bij Lucia Nankoe, de gastcurator. Samen met haar team sprak zij vele nakomelingen van bruidsparen, van wie minimaal één voorouder een Surinaamse achtergrond heeft. De resulterende verzameling portretten is sinds de uitgave van een boek en een reizende tentoonstelling in 2019 gestaag blijven groeien. Inmiddels telt het project meer dan 135 foto’s en verhalen, die samen bijna een eeuw Surinaamse geschiedenis beslaan. Lucia Nankoe groeide op in Amsterdam en studeerde moderne letterkunde aan de Sorbonne in Parijs. Studie in Frankrijk: Literatuur(Lettres Modernes) en Geschiedenis. Sinds 1986 doceert ze Frans, Franse media en literatuur aan de Faculteit Communicatie en Journalistiek aan de Hogeschool van Utrecht.
