Brecht van Hulten praat met regisseur Marc Schmidt over zijn documentaire Als de nacht maar niet valt. Hoeveel uur heb je vannacht geslapen? Tel je wel eens zonder reden? Voelt het of je gedachten soms door iemand van buitenaf worden gestuurd? Preventie speelt een steeds grotere rol in de geestelijke gezondheidszorg. In plaats van te genezen, proberen we mentale problemen in toenemende mate te voorkomen, onder meer door enorme hoeveelheden data te verzamelen. In Als de nacht maar niet valt wordt deze ontwikkeling tegen het licht gehouden. In drie verhalen, in Nederland, Noorwegen en de USA, observeren we verschillende stadia van preventie: van vroege interventies bij basisschoolkinderen om angst op latere leeftijd te voorkomen, tot een jonge man die probeert een nieuwe psychose te voorkomen. In Florida vindt preventie haar hoogtepunt, als er een wijk wordt gebouwd waarin alle frictie wordt weggenomen met het ultieme doel om iedereen gelukkig te maken. Overal in de film duiken vragen op. De hoofdpersonen worden voortdurend gemeten en ondervraagd. De film zelf bevraagt deze vragen op zijn beurt weer: wat meten we met het verzamelen van gegevens over onze mentale toestand? Worden we inderdaad gelukkiger wanneer we helemaal geen tegenslag, geen onzekerheid en imperfectie ervaren? Wat gaat er verloren in deze zoektocht naar ons optimale zelf?
