Brecht van Hulten praat met schrijver en regisseur Marlies Smeenge over haar debuutroman De Bananenlezers. Loekie begint aan de prestigieuze studie Toonkunst op een Belgische toneelschool. Ze valt van de ene cultuurshock in de andere spraakverwarring. Soms vraagt ze zich af wanneer de verborgen camera's tevoorschijn komen en zal blijken dat de opleiding helemaal niet bestaat. Ze komt te wonen in woongroep Kijkdoos, die is gevestigd in een pand waar ze telkens nieuwe gangen en deuren ontdekt en dat bewoond wordt door een kleurrijke verzameling mensen die nogal vastzitten in het leven. Om onduidelijke redenen noemen ze Loekie de Koikarper. Zonder zich daar al te bewust van te zijn woelt Loekie met haar Hollandse directheid van alles om, zowel op haar opleiding als in de woongroep. Om de chaos in de overvolle Kijkdoos te beteugelen en toegelaten te worden tot het tweede studiejaar zal Loekie een tandje bij moeten zetten. Ze wordt gedwongen uit haar waarnemersrol te stappen, onwaarschijnlijke vriendschappen te sluiten en zich werkelijk in het diepe te storten. Marlies Smeenge (1993) is regisseur en schrijver. Ze maakte meerdere documentaires, waaronder De Butlers (VPRO), die de belangrijke internationale Prix Europa won voor beste documentaireserie.
