Brecht van Hulten in gesprek met regisseur en schrijver Marlies Smeenge. Op 1e Kerstdag start bij de VPRO op NPO 3 de vierdelige serie De butlers. ‘Butlers… bestaan die nog?!’ Jazeker. Sterker nog: onder rijken uit Azië, het Midden-Oosten en Rusland neemt de behoefte aan een in West-Europa opgeleide butler steeds meer toe. Op The International Butler Academy, gelegen in het Zuid-Limburgse Simpelveld, worden studenten van over de hele wereld en van alle leeftijden de ﬁjne kneepjes van het butlervak bijgebracht. De vierdelige serie De butlers volgt zes studenten tijdens hun opleiding; wat beweegt hen te kiezen voor één van de minst zelfzuchtige beroepen die er bestaan? Regisseur en schrijver Marlies Smeenge (1993) studeerde documentaire regie aan de Nederlandse Filmacademie en woordkunst aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Antwerpen.Haar feelgood documentaires nemen de kijker mee naar bijzondere en soms bijna onwerkelijke plekken. Marlies maakte al eerder een korte documentaire over het leven op The International Butler Academy: The Ballet of Service (2020). De film won onder andere The Grand Prix Documentary op het Mecal Pro Festival in Barcelona.
