Annemieke Bosman in gesprek met Michel Krielaars, schrijver, journalist en Rusland-kenner. Vorige week verscheen Rivier van bloed. Een cultuurgeschiedenis van de Wolga. Een reis naar de wortels van Rusland. Het lijkt steeds onmogelijker te worden om Rusland en zijn acties echt te begrijpen. Het hart van Rusland is de Wolga, 3500 kilometer lang, de bron van de ideeën en mythes die het land gevormd hebben tot wat het is: een imperiale macht die uiteenvallen van zijn rijk in 1992 nog altijd niet accepteert. Om Rusland te ontrafelen reisde Michel Krielaars over en langs de Wolga op zoek naar juist die verhalen. Michel Krielaars was chef boeken van NRC en van 2007 tot 2012 correspondent in Rusland. Inmiddels heeft hij een omvangrijk oeuvre geschreven over Rusland, waarvan Het brilletje van Tsjechov en De klant van de heilstaat de bekendste titels zijn. Zijn laatste boek Oorlog met Rusland verscheen na de inval in Oekraïne.
