Vanaf zondag 11 juni 2023 is bij de VPRO de avontuurlijke Jeugd documentaireserie 'Kinderen van Mavungu' te zien. In deze jeugdserie volgt de kijker Yoseva (14), Kenny (13) en Maticha (14) in hun laatste jaar van de basisschool in hun dorp Pikin Slee diep in het Surinaamse regenwoud. Ze leven in een mysterieuze wereld vol rituelen en bosgoden, van wie Mavungu voor kinderen de belangrijkste is. Elke aflevering wordt ingeleid met een tori, verhalen over tradities, ingesproken door Typhoon.  'Kinderen van Mavungu' is gemaakt door Mirjam Marks en Vinije Haabo. Mirjam Marks (1965) ging na haar studie Theaterwetenschappen bij VPRO Jeugd werken en specialiseerde zich in het ontwikkelen en realiseren van jeugddocumentaire(series). Als een van de makers van de serie 'Ruilen Internationaal'bezocht ze in 1997 voor het eerst Suriname en werd ze meteen verliefd op het land. In Suriname maakte ze verschillende documentaires voor de Nederlandse televisie, initieerde ze workshops voor kinderen en was ze in 2009 mede-oprichter en creatief directeur van kindermuseum Villa Zapakara. Sinds 2018 ontwikkelt ze projecten samen met Stichting de Vrolijkheid met kinderen en jongeren in asielzoekerscentra. Voor 'Kinderen van Mavungu' heeft Mirjam nauw samengewerkt met Vinije Haabo, geboren in Pikin Slee en op zijn 14de naar de stad verhuisd om verder te leren, net als de kinderen in de serie. In 2000 maakte Marks in Pikin Slee een film over Vinije Haabo voor de serie 'Wie niet weg is is gebleven' in het kader van 25 jaar onafhankelijkheid en sindsdien is zij nauw betrokken bij het dorp.
