Annemieke Bosman praat met schrijver Mohammed Benzakour over zijn boek "Het lied van Agilouz". Als Mohammed Benzakour verneemt dat zijn moeder nooit meer volledig zal genezen van een herseninfarct, wandelt hij terneergeslagen door het park. Plots hoort hij een jubelend geluid dat hij nauwelijks kan thuisbrengen. Vanuit een boomtop kwinkeleert een vogeltje alsof het hem wil verleiden. Benzakour vergeet voor even zijn verdriet. Tussen hem en het vogeltje, dat hij Agilouz noemt, ontstaat een ongewone vriendschap. Vol overgave stort Benzakour zich op het vogelen. De koekoek, het winterkoninkje, het prachtvinkje; steeds weer raakt hij verliefd. Hij leest, hij gluurt, hij peinst, hij fantaseert. Wanneer hij hoort dat er in vogelparadijs Indonesië méér exemplaren in kooitjes zitten dan er rondvliegen, besluit hij daar eigenhandig wat aan te doen en pakt de koffers. Maar hoe verstandig is dat? Kunnen die vogels in het wild wel overleven? Is het wel zo kies om andermans vogels stiekem los te laten?
