Brecht van Hulten praat met Murat Isik over zijn nieuwe In de mist van Golden Gate Park. Zomer 2001. Metin Mutlu gaat studeren in San Francisco. Met het betreden van deze nieuwe, vrije wereld is hij vastbesloten zijn oude zelf achter te laten. In plaats van de verlegen toehoorder die hij in Amsterdam was, wil hij in Amerika iemand anders worden: een zelfbewuste en daadkrachtige man. Metin studeert rechten maar het idee dat hij zijn leven zal slijten als jurist benauwt hem. Op zoek naar een uitweg stort hij zich in San Francisco vol op het keuzevak Creative Writing. Tijdens die colleges ontmoet hij de mysterieuze Joan Springfield, voor wie hij als een blok valt. Zijn nieuwe vrije leven lijkt Metin goed af te gaan en langzaam ontluikt de schrijver in hem. Dan storten onvermoede gebeurtenissen hem echter in een overrompelend avontuur, terwijl ontwikkelingen in San Francisco en aan het thuisfront zijn verblijf in een heel ander licht stellen. Metin komt voor onmogelijke dilemma’s te staan. Murat Isik (1977) won met Wees onzichtbaar (2017) onder meer de Libris Literatuur Prijs 2018, de Boekhandelsprijs 2018 en de Inktaap 2019. Ook werd de roman door nrc tot Boek van het Jaar 2017 uitgeroepen. Er werden al meer dan 200.000 exemplaren van verkocht. Isik debuteerde in 2012 met de roman Verloren grond, die bekroond werd met de Bronzen Uil-publieksprijs. Zijn werk werd vertaald in het Duits, Zweeds en Turks. In 2019 was hij de auteur van het Boekenweekessay: Mijn moeders strijd.
