Annemieke Bosman praat Nadine Akkerman over haar boek De hartenkoningin, het leven van Elizabeth Stuart. Om het leven Elizabeth Stuart hangen veel mythes: ze zou spilziek zijn geweest en meer van haar aapjes hebben gehouden dan van haar kinderen. En dan werd ze ook nog eeuwenlang spottend ‘Winterkoningin’ genoemd, omdat ze maar één jaar koningin van Bohemen was. De Hartenkoningin laat een heel andere vrouw zien. De Schotse koningsdochter was slim, geestig en excentriek, en ze beschikte over een ijzersterk geheugen. Ze trouwde met de toekomstige keurvorst van de Palts, Frederik, en volgde hem naar Duitsland. Een jaar nadat ze in 1619 in Praag tot koning en koningin van Bohemen waren gekroond, werden ze alweer verbannen, waarna ze zich in Den Haag vestigden, op een steenworp afstand van het Binnenhof. Toen Frederik in 1632 stierf, dompelde Elizabeth zich in diepe rouw. Ze was erop gebrand de Duitse erflanden voor haar kinderen terug te krijgen, waarvoor ze haar grote internationale netwerk aanboorde. Ze hanteerde haar ganzenveer met dezelfde behendige precisie waarmee ze ooit te paard, hoogzwanger, wilde zwijnen had gespietst. Ze had bovendien veel meer invloed op de gang van zaken in oorlogvoerend Europa dan tot nu toe is aangenomen. Nadine Akkerman (1978) is hoogleraar vroegmoderne literatuur en cultuur aan de Universiteit Leiden. Gedurende het academiejaar 2022-2023 was ze Visiting Senior Research Fellow aan Jesus College in Oxford. Ze ontcijferde en publiceerde de briefwisselingen van Elizabeth Stuart. Eerder schreef ze onder meer Invisible Agents, over de rol van vrouwen in vroegmoderne spionagenetwerken. Haar interdisciplinaire en vernieuwende onderzoeksmethoden zijn bekroond met de Ammodo Science Award en de Dr. Hendrik Muller Prijs.
