Annemieke Bosman in gesprek met schrijver Ramy el Dardiry. Zijn debuutroman 'Tussen morgenzee en avondland' verscheen dit voorjaar en laat op sprankelende en poëtische wijze zien hoe uit een mengelmoes van culturen nieuwe, inspirerende verhalen ontstaan. Wanneer hoofdpersoon Amir hoort dat zijn vader Nessim een week eerder in Alexandrië is begraven, probeert hij die informatie weg te stoppen, de stad en zijn vader te vergeten. Hij wil in Nederland wortelen en carrière maken, en zijn leven niet laten beïnvloeden door de dood van een man die zijn gezin ooit in de steek liet. Tevergeefs. Alexandrië kruipt via een bijna vergeten droom zijn hoofd in. Ook Nessim heeft ooit geprobeerd de stad achter zich te laten. In zijn jeugd ziet hij hoe de nationalistische plannen van de Egyptische regering geen ruimte bieden voor de levendige, internationale gemeenschap. Steeds meer families vertrekken en ook Nessim wil naar Europa. Misschien dat de liefde tussen hem en een Joods meisje daar wel een kans krijgt. Ramy El-Dardiry is onderzoeker en schrijver. Hij promoveerde in de natuurkunde en werkt bij de Wetenschappelijke Raad voor het Regeringsbeleid. Zijn korte verhalen verschenen in onder meer De Gids, Kluger Hans, Liter en NRC. In 2020 ontving hij de El Hizjra Literatuurprijs.
