Annemieke Bosman spreekt regisseur en documentairemaker Sander Burger over Totem de openingsfilm van Cinekid Festival 2022. Totem gaat over de elfjarige Ama (Amani-Jean Philippe), dochter van twee uitgeprocedeerde Senegalese asielzoekers. Ama voelt zich helemaal Nederlands. Ze is een fanatieke zwemster en droomt ervan ooit net zo goed te worden als Ranomi Kromowidjojo, de beste Nederlandse zwemster aller tijden. Op een avond worden haar moeder en broertje gearresteerd. Ama weet uit handen van de politie te blijven en gaat op zoek naar haar vader die nachtdienst heeft. Ze wil absoluut niet naar Senegal worden uitgezet. Zo begint haar zwerftocht door Rotterdam. Tijdens haar zoektocht krijg ze onverwacht gezelschap van een gigantisch stekelvarken. Met behulp van de mysterieuze Kouyaté leert Ama meer over haar totemdier, dat ze Totem heeft genoemd en dat haar al die tijd iets duidelijk probeert te maken.
