Annemieke Bosman in gesprek met Sandra Smets, kunsthistoricus en gastconservator van het project 'Kunst tussen de ruïnes'. Hierin staan kunstenaars in Rotterdam tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog centraal. Hoe verliep hun leven in nasleep van het bombardement van 14 mei 1940? Voor welke onmogelijke keuzes kwamen zij te staan? De presentatie in Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen toont een rijke selectie schilder- en tekenwerk (plus enkele sculpturen) uit de MBVB-collectie. Het is werk van grotendeels Rotterdamse makers, zoals Agnes Canta, Wally Elenbaas en Dolf Henkes. Ze vertellen het verhaal van hun tijd: een wereld op drift, verwarring, bombardementen, ruïnes en onverwachte momenten van schoonheid. Veel werk is lang niet te zien geweest! Sandra schreef ook het boek 'De vuurvogelgeneratie', waarin Smets het leven beschrijft van een tiental kunstenaars tijdens de oorlog in Rotterdam. Het schetst een beeld van een stad in puin en hoe kunstenaars de brokstukken weer mede aan elkaar lijmden.
