Suzanne Bosman in gesprek met Suzanne Veldink, gastconservator. Sinds dit voorjaar is in het Singer Laren werk te zien van George Hendrik Breitner (1857-1923). Vaak omschreven als de 'schilder van Amsterdam', 'schilderfotograaf' en 'Nederlands impressionist', maar Breitner overstijgt deze labels. Voor de troepen uit neemt Breitner de vrijheid om zich uit te drukken in kleur en in een karakteristiek, krachtig handschrift. In de tentoonstelling Breitner laat gastconservator Suzanne Veldink zien hoe baanbrekend en invloedrijk Breitner is geweest door terug te keren naar de basis: zijn kunstwerken. Op die manier bekeken komt een andere Breitner naar voren: een oerkunstenaar die verschillende genres in een nieuw jasje steekt en bestaande conventies aan zijn laars lapt. Terwijl de kunstcritici hem afbreken, kijken collega-kunstenaars juist vol bewondering toe. In de tentoonstelling met ruim 60 schilderijen en werken op papier zet Veldink de ontwikkeling van Breitner in nieuw perspectief: als pionier voor wie onderwerpen geen doel op zich zijn. Eerder een middel om te experimenterend met gedurfd kleurgebruik en expressieve lijnen.
