Brecht van Hulten in gesprek met Thijs de Raedt, conservator en samensteller van de tentoonstelling 'Vlaamse expressionisme. Heerlijke herinneringen' in het Kunstmuseum in Den Haag. De moderne wereld lijkt op het Vlaamse platteland ver weg na de Eerste Wereldoorlog, maar dringt steeds meer door, ook in de schilderijen van Gustave De Smet en Frits Van den Berghe. Zij behoren tot de belangrijkste schilders van wat in de jaren 1920 het 'Vlaams expressionisme' wordt genoemd en brengen de moderne figuratieve schilderkunst in België tot een hoogtepunt. Naast werk van De Smet en Van den Berghe zijn er ook werken van Jozef Cantré, Constant Permeke en Edgard Tytgat.
