Annemieke Bosman in gesprek met Thijs de Raedt, conservator bij het Kunstmuseum Den Haag. In het Kunstmuseum is komende maanden de tentoonstelling Universum Max Beckmann te zien. Ruimtelijke beleving is belangrijk voor de Duitse schilder Max Beckmann (1884-1950) die tot de meest eigenzinnige en unieke kunstenaars van de twintigste eeuw behoort. Het vernieuwende en moderne van Beckmanns werk zit in niet zozeer in zijn onderwerpskeuze, maar juist in de uitwerking ervan. Specifiek in de weergave en manipulatie van de ruimte. Daarin maakte de schilder een grote ontwikkeling door, die in verband te brengen is met de onstuimige jaren waarin zijn werk ontstond. Zijn ontwikkeling als schilder is te volgen aan de manier waarop hij omgaat met de ruimte: van vroege monumentale, traditionele composities tot hoekig en vervreemdend perspectief, opstapelingen, afsnijdingen en opvallende formaten. In deze overzichtstentoonstelling (de eerste overzichtstentoonstelling in Nederland sinds 1956 – die ook in Kunstmuseum Den Haag plaatsvond) onderzoekt Kunstmuseum Den Haag deze verbeeldingen van de ruimte in het oeuvre van Max Beckmann: een levenslange obsessie van de schilder.
