Annemieke Bosman in gesprek met Wessel Krul, kunsthistoricus. Van zijn hand verscheen onlangs de biografie over schilder Charley Toorop: Charley Toorop. Een schildersleven. Charley Toorop is een van de opvallendste en indrukwekkendste kunstenaars uit de eerste helft van de twintigste eeuw. Ze ging met hart en ziel op in haar schilderijen en combineerde haar werk met een al even bewogen privéleven. Toorop was moeder van drie kinderen, had vele hartstochtelijke affaires en was bevriend met sleutelfiguren uit de kunst en literatuur van het interbellum. De schilderijen van Charley Toorop zijn radicaal persoonlijk. Getekend door jeugdtrauma's zocht ze haar waarheid in de verf. Haar schilderijen zijn geen realistische voorstellingen, maar dromen en visioenen.
