De A1, de weg door de Veluwe, over de IJssel naar de grens met Duitsland gaat op de schop. De weg wordt verbreed en er komen ijzeren poorten met verkeersbegeleiding. Ooit werd de weg aangelegd om ons patriottisme aan te wakkeren. Want wie langs de Veluwe en andere landschappen raasde, zou vanzelf een goede vaderlander worden; dromend van brede rivieren door traag oneindig landschap en de handen vast aan het stuur. Maar wat is er straks nog over van die natuur-patriottistische educatie? Mathijs Deen maakte de documentaire over de A1.
