Toen Hendrik Gommer voor de zoveelste keer werd afgewezen voor een vaste aanstelling op de universiteit, gooide hij het roer om. Hij reisde in Ierland langs de talrijke neolithische grafkamers die wij kennen als hunebedden, zette zijn universitaire ambities overboord en deed gewoon waar hij zin in had: hunebedden bestuderen. De enorme stenen gaven Gommer niet alleen nieuwe energie, maar ook inzicht in hoe mensen 7000 jaar geleden Europa binnentrokken, het land in cultuur brachten, vee gingen houden en hun doden bijzetten in onwrikbare bouwwerken van zwerfkeien.
