Auteur Bert Jan Flim schreef al eerder het indringende boek Onder de klok over het verzet en georganiseerde hulp aan joodse kinderen. Flim werkte ook mee aan een vierdelig Spoor Terug in 2011 over onderduiken van programmamaker Michal Citroen. Dit nieuwe, niet eerder vertelde, bijzondere verhaal van Het grote kinderspel is het onderwerp van Het Spoor Terug.
