Het Spoor Terug; Hiddensee, 11.23

In de periode van de bouw van de Muur tot de Wende probeerden honderden mensen uit de DDR over de Oostzee naar het Westen te vluchten. Veel van hen werden gepakt, en een onbekend aantal is verdronken. Schattingen variëren tussen de 170 en 190 mannen, vrouwen en kinderen. Vooral de oversteek van Hiddensee naar het vijftig kilometer verderop gelegen Denemarken was gevaarlijk. Mathijs Deen bezocht Hiddensee en sprak met de schrijver Lutz Seiler, die het boek ‘Kruso’ schreef over het vluchteiland. Hij maakte voor Het Spoor Terug de documentaire Hiddensee.
