Het Spoor Terug: Kweekje #3: Ontworteld

De geschiedenis van kweekjes blijkt ook een verhaal van ontworteling te zijn. Om iets te bereiken in het leven, te studeren of te werken, moesten Surinamers naar ‘het moederland’. Maar hoe welkom was Nederland voor haar overzeese kinderen? Elke nieuwe migratiegolf bracht nieuwe kweekjes voort. Ze werden kweekjes in een land waar het moeilijk wortel schieten is. Het verlangen naar Suriname en gemis van famiri klinkt door op de cassettepost die families elkaar stuurden. Nicole’s moeder Jetty kent het gevoel als geen ander. Om verder te studeren moest ze haar baby Glynis - Nicole's oudere zus - achterlaten in Suriname. Nicole kan het zich niet voorstellen. Maar, ontdekt ze in gesprekken met andere kweekjes, misschien is de traditie van kweekjes ook een kracht? Socioloog Aspha Bijnaar wijst op de oorsprong van kweekjes: de trans-Atlantische slavernij. Was het systeem van kweekjes een overlevingsstrategie? Ondertussen probeert Nicole de keuze van haar moeder om haar achter te laten, te begrijpen.
