Het doorgangshuis was een treurnis voor de moeders die hun kind nooit meer terug zagen na de geboorte. Doorgang betekende in de praktijk adoptie: de baby ging bijna rechtstreeks vanuit de baarmoeder naar een nieuwe moeder. Rene Oomen maakte voor Het Spoor Terug een documentaire over het katholieke baby- en moedertehuis.
