Norge hadde aldri hatt det bedre. Tidlig på syttitallet steg lønningene, arbeidsdagen krympet, og en vanlig industriarbeider kunne for første gang drømme om både sommerferie og ny oppvaskbenk. Og det var nettopp da, i overflodens lyseste morgen, at en hel generasjon unge nordmenn bestemte seg for å rive systemet ned til grunnen. Hvorfor blir man revolusjonær akkurat når alt går bra?   Det er paradokset Ole Asbjørn Ness går løs på sammen med en av arkitektene bak opprøret selv: Pål Steigan, nettopp fylt 77, medgrunnlegger av AKP (m-l) og av avisen Klassekampen, og den 21-åringen Mao Zedong personlig insisterte på å håndhilse på i Beijing i 1970. I dag skriver han fremdeles, hver dag, på steigan.no.   Han kaller seg selv én ting fremfor alt: en motstandsmann. Det er ingen tilfeldig betegnelse. Steigan ble født i 1949 av to foreldre som hadde satt livet på spill mot den tyske okkupasjonen — faren i etterretningsorganisasjonen XU, moren som kurer. «Jeg er hardkodet til å bli motstandsmann,» sier han. Spørsmålet episoden sirkler rundt, er hva som skjer når et menneske bærer en slik arv videre — og selv får avgjøre hvem fienden er.   Han forteller om møtet med Mao, om kampen for å gjøre Klassekampen til dagsavis uten en krone i statsstøtte, og om hvordan han og Tron Øgrim, etter eget utsagn, aktivt holdt den væpnede venstreterroren ute av Norge.
