Common Man Airwaves: Homeschooling, Critical Thinking and the Lost Tools of Learning

This week on Food For Thought Radio, Suk and I opened up a big conversation about homeschooling: why more parents are questioning the mainstream school system, what education is actually meant to achieve, and why teaching children how to think may matter far more than teaching them what to memorise. We explored Suk’s own experience of taking his son out of school, the limits of the national curriculum in both state and private settings, and the wider concern that schooling often rewards conformity and recall rather than curiosity, discernment and genuine understanding.We also dug into older models of learning, especially Dorothy L. Sayers’ essay The Lost Tools of Learning and the classical trivium framework of grammar, logic and rhetoric. From there, we looked at how those ideas connect to critical thinking, resisting propaganda, practical life skills, and helping children discover their own path rather than simply being directed into one.
