In this first week of Advent, we step into a season marked by waiting, expecting, celebrating, and spiritually preparingour hearts for the coming of Christ. Advent isn’t just a countdown to Christmas—it’s a reminder of the God who has come, is here, and will come again.

Pastor Lindsey unpacks the rich history and purpose of Advent, explores its roots stretching back to the 4th century, and walks us through practical ways to observe this sacred season—including the meaning behind the Advent wreath and its candles.

This week we light the First Candle: Hope, discovering that biblical hope is not wishful thinking—it’s a settled certainty, an active, confident expectation grounded in God’s character and His promises. From Genesis 3:15 to the birth of Jesus, the people of God held onto hope for over 4,000 years. Their waiting teaches us how to wait today: not impatiently, but with joy, trust, and lives entwined with the strength of God Himself.

Through Scripture, story, and encouragement, we learn that hope is not passive. Hope waits, hope expects, hope anchors us, and hope reminds us that God always makes good on His promises.

If you’re longing for renewal in this season—or needing your hope restored—this episode will help you slow down, breathe deep, and let your heart be re-centered on the One who is truly “worth the wait.”

Over time I gravitated to the original teachings of the Buddha, embodied in the Theravadan tradition, for their down-to-earth clarity, and important sources for me have included the teachers of Spirit Rock Meditation Center and the Pali Canon itself. More recently, I've explored grounding the dharma in modern evolutionary neuropsychology - "neurodharma" - recognizing how mind arises dependently upon the body, especially the nervous system as it tries to meet ancient needs for raw survival. I am especially interested in using these approaches to heighten the learning - the cultivation (bhavana) - from beneficial experiences (otherwise often wasted on the brain) to reduce the underlying sense of deficit and disturbance that causes the craving that causes suffering and harm.
