Just ahead of us is a sacred time of year, a  period of several weeks when the fixed star Sirius is in close  longitudinal proximity to our Sun.  Sirius is the brightest star  in Earth's sky. But each year, from late June to mid August, when Sirius  rises in the sky at the same time as our Sun, its light seems to be  hidden from our view.
