Hotel Artemis
from Second Chance Cinema · host Second Chance Cinema
This week on Second Chance Cinema, MC and Spro check into Hotel Artemis, the 2018 crime thriller where Los Angeles is thirsty, criminals have health insurance, and Jodie Foster runs an exclusive members-only hospital for people who absolutely cannot call 911. With a ridiculously good cast: Sterling K. Brown, Dave Bautista, Sofia Boutella, Charlie Day, Jeff Goldblum, and Zachary Quinto. Hotel Artemis has all the ingredients of a cult classic. A great premise. A strange near-future world. Criminals with code names. Dave Bautista as a "healthcare professional." What more could you possibly need? So why did this thing mostly disappear? We talk about what works (damn near everything), what doesn’t (the robbery masks), and whether we ourselves would trust it. Hotel Artemis deserves another night’s stay. Check it out.

What this episode covers
You can’t exactly leave this hospital a Yelp review. MC and Spro revisit Hotel Artemis, Drew Pearce’s stylish 2018 thriller starring Jodie Foster as “The Nurse,” the agoraphobic manager of a secret Los Angeles hospital built exclusively for criminals. There are riots outside, assassins in the hallways, stolen diamonds causing problems, Jeff Goldblum being Jeff Goldblum, and Dave Bautista playing an orderly named Everest, which may be one of the most sensible casting decisions in cinematic history. But underneath the gunfire and neon is a surprisingly melancholy little movie about grief, guilt, loyalty, and people who have spent so long surviving that they’ve forgotten how to live. Is Hotel Artemis an overlooked gem? A fantastic concept trapped inside an okay movie? Or exactly the kind of strange, ambitious swing that Second Chance Cinema was invented to revisit?
